Enforce policy, ensure auditability and protect medical devices.

Effective security for the health sector.

Protecting Patient Identifiable Data has become a major focus within the NHS. There are three main challenges: data moving out of the Trust, incoming malware and viruses and hackers attempting to access data centres.

Whilst all Trusts have some measure of inbound antivirus and malware protection, many still fail to consider how data can leave through endpoints. Factor insecure web based applications and the challenges of securing virtual environments and sensitive email and the threat landscape for health begins to take shape.

With solutions ranging from assessing existing data vulnerabilities on the network to evolving and enforcing data security policies, Trend Micro is helping Trusts and Healthcare Providers ensure compliance and authorised access to key data whilst reducing the risks of accidental leakage.

Implement and enforce data policy.
Recognising and controlling sensitive patient data.

The convenience of email often encourages inadvertent breaches of patient confidentiality.

In June 2008, the publication of the ‘Data Handling Procedures in Government’ Final Report reinforced the urgency to recognise, manage and implement effective compliance and data security measures.

Device encrypting and providing port control is an essential first step but it’s only part of the solution. Such measures will not prevent authorised insiders from sending sensitive documents via Webmail, Instant Messaging or through corporate email systems. They will also not prevent the movement of sensitive documents between devices whether encrypted or not.

Trend Micro can help your Trust identify what data is sensitive, understand access patterns, set and enforce policy-based permissions and educate authorised users with timely with on-screen warnings and guidance before a violation occurs.

Block medical device malware.
Securing your medical equipment.

More and more critical medical equipment used in Hospitals is now ‘network ready’, offering wireless and/or wired LAN access.

This connectivity can potentially expose a device to serious network-borne malware threats.

Medical devices are highly complex and often operationally critical. They include specialist imaging scanners, monitors and radiology equipment.

To minimise the risk of problems due to operating systems or software, many clinicians elect to operate critical patient care devices without reliance on an installed local client or server. If software is installed, any updates are tested and approved for use by the Trust first. Patches may be many months out of date before they are even applied.

In response, Trend Micro has developed Deep Security, a virtual malware agent; security that works at the network card level of the medical device. The agent delivers intrusion detection and prevention, firewall, integrity monitoring and log inspection. Requiring no operating software, machine resources or costly network appliances, the agent can be centrally updated (patched) without re-starting equipment.
